Day-time in Cambridge
Days Out
Cambridge would make an ideal centre for your East of England break, with fun days out for all ages and interests. Ely with its breathtaking cathedral is a charming city, ideal for a daytrip. Horseracing enthusiasts will love Newmarket, the home of British Horseracing. You’ll find the National Stud with its adorable (not to mention hugely expensive) new-born foals, and the National Horse Racing museum is crammed with equine interest.
If you enjoy historic homes and gardens, why not visit Wimpole Hall (www.wimpole.org/hall.html) that also has a famous Home Farm open to visitors, which the kids will love; Anglesey Abbey with its wonderful collection of pictures and magical gardens; or the stately Audley End house. For a very different experience visit Kentwell Hall, a moated Tudor mansion, which is renowned for its highly authentic re-creations of historical life from Tudor times to World War II.
Many come to Cambridge just to visit the Imperial War Museum’ (www.iwm.org.uk/)s site at Duxford – one of the largest and most wide-ranging Air museums in the world. Every year it also hosts several air shows featuring historic aircraft.
